Rubber floors are not new by an stretch of the imagination. However, the usage of rubber as a flooring material is growing in popularity and the types of environments in which you will find rubber flooring is expanding. More and more operators of different types of facilities are realizing the many benefits that can be found with rubber flooring.

First and foremost, we all know that rubber is an extremely durable material. One of the most common places to find rubber flooring for many years has been in gyms and health clubs. No other flooring material is relied upon more in an atmosphere that continually takes the beating of heavy weights, usually in excess of 100 pounds, being let go and crashing to the floor.

But, the durability is just one outstanding feature of rubber floors. The excellent slip resistance and ease of cleaning up spills make this an excellent choice for commercial kitchens, bartender stations, and laundromats. The cushioning of rubber floors make this an excellent choice for places where people are standing for long periods of time, such as retail stores, convention centers, trade show floors, and factories. The cushioning reduces foot fatigue and helps prevent foot injuries. Other facilities also have come to appreciate the ability of rubber floors to resist mold and mildew, protect against burns, and absorb sound. Also, as an added bonus, rubber is a renewable resource, so rubber floors have become a key component in environmentally friendly construction and renovation.

As with any flooring surface, there are specifics involved in the proper care and maintenance. For those unfamiliar with caring for rubber surfaces, the maintenance involved may be intimidating. One does not care for rubber floors as one cares for vinyl. Traditional finishes and sealers do not adhere to rubber. It also cannot be polished like a stone surface.

National Chemical Laboratories produces two products specifically for the maintenance of rubber flooring surfaces – FLEXI-CLEAN and FLEXI-SHEEN.  Flexi-Clean is a rubber cleaner and grease remover with a neutral pH to safely clean rubber surfaces. Flexi-Sheen is a wax and conditioner that protects rubber floors and, if desired, can be burnished to bring out a gloss to rubber floors. In addition to those two specific rubber products, Qwik-Scrub scrub and recoat cleaner is an option for intense cleaning and preparing rubber for applications of Flexi-Sheen.

In the video below, National Chemical Laboratories New England Regional Manager Chris Robertson demonstrates not only how easy it is to apply Flexi-Sheen, but also how impressive the results are after just two coats are applied to a rubber gymnasium floor at a Connecticut school.
